Saburido

Girls after watching this clip, I want you to think about the chain of events that ultimately lead to Reggie crashing his car into the vehicle that Jaqueline was in at the time of the accident.  There remains no question that Reggie is ultimately at fault.  Had he not decided to drink and drive that night, the turnout of events would have been much different.  However, is Reggie solely to blame?  After all, does it not take an entire village to raise a child?

  1. I believe that it is Reggie's fault entirely. Although his parents could have raised him one way, in the end, it was his decision to drive whilst under the influence. Evidently, alcahol causes many accidents in one year; but it's not the responsibility of the parents or 'village' to make sure their children drink and drive, because at the end of the day, the decision is solely one person's.

Reggie's poor decision choice caused one's person life to change forever, obviously more education needs to be held to show people the outcomes and consequences of Drink Driving.

  2. I don't know where to start! That was a extremely emotional clip and i feel extremely sorry for the young girl and her friends that were involved and I do partially believe that this accident could have been alot worse will all five of them dying. He made a good decision to try and swerve out of the way.

However, this is Reggie's fault. He was the one that took away two people's lives and caused someones life to change forever. This clip proves to everyone that they should not drink and drive and that more education is needed to show people thta drink driving is extremely different and i feel complete sympathy towards all victims.

  3. I think it is completely Reggie's fault; he should not have been stupid enough to drink and drive. Parents/villages can only do so much for their children. They can keep telling them what’s right and what is wrong, but in the end it is up to the child weather or not to take what they have been told and use it.
I think that this accident could have been avoided if Reggie instead of driving to the pub or where ever he went, he could have taken a taxi this way he wouldn’t have been able to drink and drive. If he didn’t do this his friends should have been able to tell him not to go and drive home. To leave his car there and take a cab home. People do stupid things when they are intoxicated they can’t think for themselves, they need other to look out for them. If someone was looking out for Reggie and telling him when he had too much to drink then maybe this event could have been avoided.
Because of Reggies poor choice a life was destroyed, Jacqueline may have her life but she will never be able to do the things she always wanted to do.

  4. WOW... that was a really, REALLY good video. Truthfully, the video was somewhat disturbing in a few aspects, but that is why it's so intriguing.Clearly it is Reggie's fault, but besides living 7 years in prison and a fine of $20,000, he's going to have to live with the fact that he destroyed 4 innocent lives for the rest of his life.
IF he did not drink on that night, he surely would have done the same on another, and if that was the case, it could have been a whole family, it could have been a woman who is pregnant, it could have been a police trying to save one's life... (too much hawaii five 0 for me~)...the possibilities are endless!!
Then should we not blame his friends as well? If they were true friends, if they were mature and had a bit of common sense and knowledge, they would not have let him drive off.

  5. :O This video is really good Miss V :)
From watching this video, I do believe it is Reggie's fault. This is because he was under the influence of drinking and as a result of that, he has caused two deaths and one very horrific accident. If he was not under the influence of drinking, the outcome would have been entirely different. Even 7 years in prison and a fine of $20,000 would not ever compare to the innocent lives he destroyed. But, I do feel sorry for him. He stated in the video that he had never been in trouble with the police before and even just having a few drinks with your friends and then going out for a drive can turn your life around. This video has shown me that anyone can do reckless things even if you have never gotten into trouble before and to be careful. Think before you act :) Don't drink and drive!!

  6. This is a really depressing movie. I feel completely sorry for Jaqueline and also that it is all Reggie's fault.

  7. i heard that katya girl's really funny... don't you agree?February 7, 2011 at 2:43 AM

Look, I completely agree with all that has previously been said. But in reality, there could've been so many other people in Reggie's situation. We're all (I hope) aware of how much drink driving goes on every day and night- and although it was definitely Reggie's fault- I don't think it's fair for us to sit here and act as a critic, as if he is the only one who's ever done such a thing; when truly, he's just one of the few that has actually paid the consequence. He did have to spend 7 years in jail, but in my opinion, the knowing that you've killed two innocent people and destroyed someone's life, would be punishment enough. Remember, in no way am I standing up for Reggie- just making a point that so many teenagers and even elderly people drink drive on a regular basis, yet they don’t have to live with the same guilt and self-loathing that Reggie does. Feel free to disagree.

  8. To try to blame someone other than Reggie is completly ludacris. If he was old enough to drink then he should of been wise enough to know the implications of his actions. To say it is his parents fault for not teaching him the difference between right and wrong is a ridiculous notion. He was remorsful, which means he knew what he did was wrong. He knew that he shouldn't of drunk and drove. He knew he had had to much to drink, yet HE still made HIS OWN DECISION. No matter who raised him, who was around him, he still made that decision, which ultimately cost 2 peoples lives and possibly destroyed another. The only comfort that the familes of the victims have is knowing that Reggie will have the live the rest of his life knowing what he has done. If i was in Reggie's situation I would much rather of been killed in the accident myself than cost the life of anyone else. I don't think anyone, let alone myself, could handle the emotional pain of knowing that you are responsible for the death of others. So in the end, it was entirely Reggie's fault, in my opinion. He made the decision, so he has to deal with the consequences.

Sorry if all that seemed a little harsh or whatever, but I feel extremly strongly on this topic. Personal experiences and such

  9. After watching this video i became moved to tears. This is surely a cruel and rude awakening to the reality that surrounds today's society.Although Jacqueline's tale is most distressing, it is far from uncommon. Sadly we are witnesses to these kinds of fatalities everyday.Jacqueline's burns have left her unable to complete even the simplest of tasks and all because of the foolish actions of an immature 18 yr old. The human brain is not fully developed till one reaches their mid 20's. This is the main reason that the legal drinking age in the United States is 21. I lay the blame soley on Reggie and his inability as a young person to make sensible decisions.Being a minor, his consumption of alcohol is a major contributing factor that triggered the chain of events. It was selfish to furthermore, get behind the wheel and endanger the lives of others. Because of his inaccurate judgement, two innocent , young lives were lost, lives that had so much ahead of them. 7 years in prison is a microscopic "punishment" in comparison to the pain and emotional and physical trauma that Jacqueline and her family have been put through, not to mention the families of the other two passengers killed. . This is not to label Reggie as a bad person but to highlight the fact that anyone, once under the influence of alchohol has the capability to maintain bad judgement especially if placed behind the wheel of a car. We can not blame Reggie's parents in this scenario as you can raise a child in the most nurturing and loving way possible and still the outcome may be the opposite.I believe that Reggie's guilty conscience will never leave him , there will never be a day where he doesn't remember what he has done. I think reality will hit him moreso now as he has become a full grown man and with that comes maturity. Now he will have realised the lives he has torn apart, the emotional trauma he has caused. We need to educate and create an awareness of the consequences of drink driving in our society. Jacqueline Saburido is truly an inspirational woman and her strength is admired by millions around the world.I hope this story will reduce the number of alcohol related fatalities and i pray tha maybe one day, drink driving will be a thing of the past

  10. Arfter watching this video it made me feel so sorry for all the people who have lost their lives to an alcohol related accident. This video shocked me, I could not belive that some of these accidents happen in the world and nobody hears about them.
When watching this I do believe that it is soley Reggie's fault. However, what we don't know is if anyone had let him drive under the influence of alcohol. I feel great sorrow for Jacqui and how this accident has affected her life. I do also though feel great sorrow for Reggie. Know and living with the fact that you have killed two people and injured a person so bad that it effects their whole life. I also feel sorry for Reggie as he is deeply sorry for what he has done. I believe that it was soley Reggies fault for causing this accident. However, he did not mean to cause any of this trouble to Jacqui's life.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I believe it is entirely Reggies fault. In the United States, it is illegal to consume alcohol under the age of 21. Reggie should have thought of any future consequences he would face if he decided to drive intoxicated. I also believe whoever was with Reggie while he was drinking should have had the decency to stop him from driving while under the influence of alcohol. I feel so sorry for what Jackie has gone through and I admire her willingness to live and carry on in her condition. I believe that Reggie will never forget that it was his fault that he killed two innocent girls and left one literally scarred for life.

  12. Firstly I would like to say that that video is one of the few things that has impacted greatly upon me in my life.
In the quote; 'It takes a village to raise a child.', there lay some form of truth to a certain extent. Yes, each generation stands of the shoulders of their elders and yes we are influenced by their words and actions, but the decisions one individual chooses to make is solely based on their personal judgment. One individual may have the most nurturing and loving upbringing, and still find themselves in the same situation, due to ONE reckless decision. Therefore, I fully believe that Reggie is to blame for this unfortunate fatality. In saying this, I am not overlooking his remorse and regret regarding the matter. I believe he is a good person with good intentions, who would never inflict such adversity upon someone- like he did to Jacqueline. Seven years may also seem insignificant or insufficient in comparison to the emotional hardships that have been placed upon numerous families. In saying this though, those seven years are basically just a "formal" or "structured" punishment, which will achieve nothing. No amount of time will erase or compensate for that momentary lapse in judgment. Reggie's real punishment would be being burdened by his actions and their outcome for every minute for the rest of his life. His actions have not only destroyed Jacqueline's bright future, but his too. He will be punished forever, he will be punishing HIMSELF.

  14. I don't think there is anyone to blame other than Reggie. At just 18, Reggie has to live with the fact that he has killed two innocent people and severley injured another. Reggie should not have been drinking in the first place. In America the legal drinking age is 21 due to the fact that the brain has not fully developed until we reach our mid 20's. The fact that Reggie was drinking and then drove is heartbreakening. There are so many ways these consequences could have been easily avoided. Although Reggie is definately in the wrong, I do feel for him in this situation. I can only begin to imagine how he feels, knowing that he could have easily avoided this real life nightmere.

  15. After watching this video I was in hysterics, this is a very powerful video, as it was so confronting, and so eye-opening, to think that people can be so reckless is incomprehensible. Now, I am not sure I heard right, but, at the start of that video did anyone else hear Reggie say, "I have lost everything, it's all gone, I loved that car." Or any combination of the sort. This man has just killed and seriously injured people and his first reaction is, that of, concern FOR HIS CAR!!! Are you joking me, anyhow I believe it would be foolish to believe that the parents, families or friends are responsible for these drunken fools' behaviour. Most parents raise their children to the best of their ability, after that it is up to the child. Contrary to Laurens comment about witnesses of Reggie driving the car, these people were completley justified,in not trying to physically stop him, as he was drunk and could have turned violent. Although, referring back to my comment about the woman at the bus stop, these witnesses, should have called the police to alert them of the situation and therfore, it is partially their fault. The main fault is that of Reggies, he was the one who got behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol. Jacqueline will have to live like this for the rest of her life, and the families of those who died will also. They were innocent children, victims of a cruel injustice.

  16. Wow, that story was so sad. In many ways I do believe that it was Reggie's fault for the way that Jackie has turned out and the horrible life that she now has to live. I also think that it is Reggie's fault for the death of Jackie's 2 friends that were also in the car at the time. If Reggie hadn't gone out drinking that night then this probably wouldn't have happened. But it isn't like he had done this on purpose, he also has to live with horrible thoughts every day knowing what he has done has wrecked many families. I think that the 7 years in prison will teach him not to ever drink and drive again. And hopefully it will also teach other people not to drink and drive because this is such a sad story, that could've easily been prevented from happening if Reggie hadn't made that one bad decision of driving home that night.

  17. After watching that video, I feel sorry for Jaqueline, but it looks as though she has a lot of support surrounding her and even though it would be a terrible experience at least she didn't die.
I agree the it is Reggies fault, but like someone said it could have beeen anyone in that situation. Although he had never been in any trouble before, it becomes obvious how a small mistake can menifest into something larger. In this situation I believe that 7 years in jail is enough compared to other crimes. Living on his conscience will be the recognition that he has ended two people lives, that he will live with for forever.
In the end the village can teach the child until his head is full, but it is whether or not the child takes on what he has been taught. Being under the influence of alchol would also mean that his decision wouldn't haveve been completely thought through.
In conclusion, I believe that it was Reggie's fault for deciding to drink drive.

  19. i agree with tori. Knowing that you killed someone would be too much of a burden to handle. I would have rather have killed myself than to live with the fact that i had killed 2 people and severely injured somoen els and have stopped them from fulfulfilling what they had wanted to do and for ruining their whole live.

  20. For me this video was very emotional and full on and I believe that it is Reggie's fault for what happened. I would not blame the parnets or the village because in the end the decision is all down to that person and if Reggie would have thought carefully and understood the things that could happen when drink driving, then Jaqueline would have not gone though what she has gone through and her friends would still be alive.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I do think that Reggie was solely to blame for this incident. However, he has made it clear that he knows it is entirely his fault, and that no one will be able to understand the regret and horror that he will face for the rest of his life, not only the jail sentence, this accident will be a massive burden to carry for the rest of his life, and it will be something that he will never forget. I do think that because he was intoxicated that, he didn't know what it was exactly he was doing when he began to drive, but when he hit the other car, it was like he got a shock awaking and realized what he had done. I don't blame his parents or any other person, because no one forced him to drink and drive, that was solely his decision, and he has to face the consequences. As sad as this is, Jaqueline has showed us that if you believe in yourself, and don't give up, that there will always be a better outcome. It is horrible to see what such a beautiful woman has become after such a horrible accident. Thankfully though, she is alive, however still slowly recovering, but she had said that there is so much support from all her friends and families, and even other people who are just donating money for her operations to help her recover completely. I do believe that it is Reggie's fault, although i can't help but feel sorry for the burden he has to carry for the rest of his life.

  22. :( Well obviously it is Reggie's fault that this traumatizing accident took place, he chose to drive while intoxicated with alchohol which is against the law, and resulted in killing and harming innocent people. By making one silly mistake it caused Reggie to be punished, and he will regret drink driving for the rest of his life.

  23. Although Reggie Shephey is undeniably the ultimate cause of the traumatic incident of 1999, when his culpability of the situation is looked into with scrutiny, it can be comprehended that there are many others indirectly involved who are partially accountable. Reggie Shephey is one of the annual tens of thousands of people who impetuously choose to disregard familiar, nationwide laws with advertised essentiality. This involves both the ‘under aged drinking’ and ‘drink driving’ policies. There is evidently some fault in society whether it’s an insufficient amount of dissuading education and advertisements or inadequate upbringing and peer pressure. In saying this, to a certain degree, we can even find culpability in ourselves. The current ideologies inducing our society to idolise alcohol are being maintained and advanced by our own generation. Thus, instead of focusing solely on the liability of Reggie and his friends and parents, it should be taken into deliberation, society’s influence and even our own.

In an entirely different light, I absolutely “venerate” Jacqueline Saburido’s powerful determination and persistence in life. It was a horrendous tragedy which severely devastated her psychologically and physiologically. As an innocent victim of a preventable situation, caused by the absence of conformity and responsibility in a young man, Saburido is an inspirational individual whose circumstances hopefully have and will perpetually deter the act of abusing alcoholic regulations.

  24. I didnt have time to get through all the comments however i sense the general consensus is that it was Reggie's fault.
I may be playing Devils advocate but thought i should throw a few things in.
Firstly although Reggie made the ultimate decision there are a lot of factors that lead to that decision and we as a society must not overlook them and take some responsability too. We as people are largely a result of the influences around us, our peers, our parents, our society. some of you mentioned in the states the legal age is 21, well if that was the legal age perhaps this accident could have been avoided, is that not the village?? coming from a loving family does not mean that teaches you to make the right decision either as some of you mentioned "but he came from a loving family", parents have to realise that from a young age their kids are absorbing more then they think and that they should start preparing them from those ages. its not just about being loved its about being taught whats right and wrong, the consequences, giving them the right set of principles to be able to chose the right friends etc if Reggie had been shown videos like these, exposed to real people in accidents alike he may have thought twice about his choice... again thats the village playing their part. There are reasons why there are much lower numbers of smokers and drink drivers now days then there was 10, 15, 20 years ago, and sorry to burst peoples bubbles but its not because nothing in society changed and the individual just happened to make the right decision... its because "the village" has put greater emphasis on the dangers of these actions. The decision comes as a result of the influences that has made that person who they are at that point in time. It is now rare to see smokers in film, price of smokes has gone up incredibly, disgusting photos on the packets, videos and adds of the disgusting reality of drink driving and smoking and the penalties are much worse. I have been clubbing for a few years now and the importance of designated drivers and taking cabs is much greater and its no longer "cool" to drink drive, its now seen as plain stupidity. Going clubbing now days they make the smokers seem like the losers by giving them a crammed spot away from the action, where as before youd get home and your hair would stink of cigarette smell and not uncommon to get cigarette burns while on the dance floor, these are actions society has taken to influence and ultimately change the decisions that lead to deaths.

Of course Reggie was stupid and made the ultimate choice for which he will be paying for the rest of his life. However, as a society, as peers and future parents we must not have the attitude "each one for themselves!" cross your fingers, close your eyes and hope everything turns out. Imagine if people like Martin Luther King or Nelson Mandela thought "well we cant influence people, why try, we cant make a difference". We must take some responsibility and realise that we can be of great influence to others, i know if my friend was Reggie i would have to take some responsability for it too, because i could have made a difference.

  26. It may take a village to raise a child, but isn’t it the sole decision of the child as to whether they take on board what morals they are imparted? Sure I believe Reggie commiserated, and in all conscience, compensated for the severe obliteration and grief he instigated; however it all comes down to the fact that he still did what he did. I am sure that at the time, he would have thought it would be okay just this ‘once’ to drive home in such an unfit state. But had he known that by hopping in that car, he was to ruin not only the lives of three acquitted people, but extinguish every spark of light he had ever had within himself, perhaps he might’ve reconsidered his decision. Perhaps his light would continue to ignite and thrive off his meticulous ethics, if he had conceptualized the consequences as a result of this infantile mistake. A petty little mistake guaranteeing him, not only a seven year sentence in prison, but an unconditional sentence to life.

Yes, it is his fault, but his fault entirely? Perhaps it is the fault of society. But if society is to blame, are we as well? After all, we’re the individuals whose actions, decisions and morals influence and contribute to the philosophies of society, and mere individuals within society. We are the bigger picture that venerate and encourage alcohol abuse through the harsh misconceptions within humanity.

Despite all this, his seven year sentence hardly compares to the life sentence of sorrow, guilt and regret which he mistakenly surrendered and confined himself to.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The village does raise the child but as Hey Zel said only the child can decide if they will live by the morals and values that they have been taught their whole life. A child could be raised in a negative environment but be one of the sweetest people you've ever met. Likewise they could have been cherished and loved as they grow up but become corrupted by smoking and drugs (alcohol isn't quite as bad if people do not abuse it). What I'm trying to say is that ultimately it was Reggie's fault because even if his parents taught him the rules it was his decision to ignore them for just that one night. That decision cost two lives and destoyed another. I believe Reggie has paid for what he did and he will never forget how one rash, careless mistake was all it took to snuff out two innocent lives and ruin another(including his). At least now, he understands what he did and people should learn from his mistake and never drink and drive.

On a more positive note who couldn't admire the courage and determination of Jacqueline and what she said, no matter what happens just keep going and live your life to the best of your ability.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Reggie is 100% to blame, not only was he drinking illegally but he was driving as well. But you have to cut him some slack, he is going to be traumatized his whole life, knowing with his acts, he killed two people.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think that it is 98% Reggie's fault because he was drunk while he was driving. Also driving under age makes it even worse. The other 2% is for Reggie's family and friends and the person who was driving Jaqueline somewhere. His friends have something to do with this because they didn't stop him from drink driving and also his family because maybe they could have taught him better. Jaqueline's driver is also to blame because she was driving on the wrong side of the rode.

  30. That youtube video was so powerful and portrayed so many messages to the community. My opinion about the clip is that young people do not realise the risks about drinking and driving. The first comment the boy made was how he had lost his car. How could anyone carer about there car after having killed to people and have seriously injured another.

However, we can not blame the boy completely for his actions. His parents and friends may have had a strong influence on his decision to drink and drive. Part of the blame also lies with the driver of the other car as it was in the wrong lane at the time of the accident. What is hard to understand is how an 18 year old was able to get hold of the drinks in the first place.

    Just my thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The video was so overwhelming and powerful. Jacqueline’s courage, strength and determination is truly inspirational.

Although other people may have impacted the way he was raised, or the way he made his decisions, but ultimately it was his choice, his decision and his actions which saw innocent people killed and critically injured. Reggie was the one who made the final call, therefore it is without question that it is basically and simply Reggie who is at fault. As said previously before by Hazel, Amira, Emma and Naima, it may take a “village” to raise a child but it is solely up to the child who makes the final decisions and choices in his/her life. I do not believe the “village” is at fault or to blame for Reggie’s actions. Despite their efforts to raise him well and teach him good from bad, right from wrong he still did what he did, and there is no point in blaming his idiotic actions on the people in his life. Yes they may have in one way or another impacted the way he views things or even his decisions, but either way, no matter what, that ‘one’ decision to get in a car and drive home drunk destroyed and crippled the lives of innocent people. Chances are that his parents, family and friends probably taught him that drink driving was careless, dangerous and completely stupid, but did he listen? I think the answers pretty clear, NO. ONE NIGHT DOESN’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE, you should never (EVER) drink drive! In the end it WAS Reggie who got drunk, it Was Reggie who made the final decision to drive home (intoxicated) and it WAS Reggie who was driving the car that ENDED two lives and DESTROYED Jacqueline’s life.

Peace. Love. And please don't DRINK DRIVE!

    ReplyDelete
  32. This is such a shocking and eye-opening video; it’s hard to know where to start. In my opinion, Reggie has the most blame upon him as he was the one who chose to drink and drive. He had the ability to stop and think about how he could possibly have injured or killed not only himself and others. When he decided to drink and drive, he not only broke the law, but killed two people and destroyed the lives of two others. Those poor innocent people have had their lives changed by the stupid and irresponsible act of one man who didn’t even get injured himself! However I believe that Reggie was not the only one responsible. Since Reggie was only eighteen, he was under the age for drinking. The bar tender who served Reggie would also be responsible as he provided alcohol to a minor. Also, Reggie’s ‘friends’ would have had the ability to tell him not to drink drive and stop him from making such a big mistake which would ultimately kill two people and destroy the lives of two others. Like in ‘An Inspector calls’ a chain of events have been the cause of the situation likewise multiple people have also contributed to the situation. When one thinks about, not just one person is to blame. STOP DRINK DRIVING FOOLS!!!!
